Oatmeal
Oatmeal, particularly the whole grain oat, is one of the most nutritionally dense foods you can get. It contains significant servings of: manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc, folate, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B5, and smaller amounts of calcium, potassium, vitamin B3, and vitamin B6. Phew! Oats contain many powerful antioxidants, including avenanthramides. These compounds may help reduce blood pressure and have anti-inflammatory and anti-itching effects to keep your dog from scratching excessively. Oats are high in the powerful soluble fiber beta-glucan, which helps reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels, promotes healthy gut bacteria and increases feelings of fullness to keep your pup content between meals. Indeed oatmeal is one of the most filling foods available. The beta-glucan it contains slows down the emptying of the stomach and increases production of the satiety hormone PYY. Beta-glucan also helps improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels. It also provides tremendous benefit in fighting constipation and promoting healthy bowel movement, particularly in older dogs. It even helps promote healthy skin and treat eczema! Oatmeal works wonders!
